GuruLib community

Filed under: Uncategorized — gurulib @ 2:30 pm

GuruLib has a community page now. If you are interested in knowing who else is using GuruLib, this is the place to go. Only public profiles and books or movies on the public shelf are listed. If you have any concerns regarding privacy, set your profile as private and also your shelves as private. All these new features are very much in the beta phase and might have some unknown bugs. We need your help in improving GuruLib by providing us with feedback and bug report.

Guru’s Recommendations (a.k.a pick of the day)

Filed under: Uncategorized — gurulib @ 9:23 am

Finally after a lot of work we have a recommendation feature working. With a very original name “Recommendation” shelf :-) Guru predicts his disciples interest in books, movies, music, games and software. To get Guru’s attention, you need to rate your titles. If you give a title 5 star rating, Guru will pick titles similar to that. If you give a lower rating, Guru will only pick very few titles similar to that. If you do not want a book, movie etc. to be considered for recommendation do not rate them in your catalog.

Guru not only predicts your interest but also  predicts how much you like them. Guru gives rating to titles in the recommendation shelf. A higher rating mean you are more likely to like that title. If you sort them based on “rating” for the recommendation shelf, you could see titles Guru has picked with higher rating. The technology is in its infancy and might need lots of correction. Please let us know how Guru’s recommendations are working for you. Guru updates his recommendations every night at 2:00 AM CST.

Author sort by last name

Filed under: Uncategorized — gurulib @ 7:51 am

Finally we implemented the author sort by last name. The main issue was the source from which I pull the catalog information do not have the name in last name, first name order. It is just one single string with the author’s name. Currently we use a simplified algorithm to identify the last name. If a name appears at the last and is greater than 2 characters then it is a last name. We hope that will for most of the cases. Thank you Kyrasama and htam for suggesting this feature.
